Similar to [[Garlaw]] and [[Tyutho]], Castus serves as a last, somewhat safe stop for loyal Imperials before reaching the Kalibras [[New Worlds]]. Unlike its fellow guardian fortresses, Castus is poorly equipped and maintained, with only a small interdiction fleet that is only marginally stronger than a system defense fleet. A serious attack would easily overwhelm Castus, though the Imperium's Strategists are aware and have drawn plans for [[Epsilon Alpha]] to counterattack after the enemy fleet takes, or destroys, Castus. Assignment to Castus is a terminal career appointment for those unlucky enough to be stationed there, and the poor future prospects of Castus only add to the list of bribe-able or blackmail-able Imperials that the large number of smugglers, pirates, and other renegades can call on to help them. The lack of enforcement of most Imperial laws not only has helped them, as the Inquisition has benefited significantly from informants and targeted interrogations on people passing through the station. So helpful is this, that the Inquisition maintains a permanent presence on the station to stay apprised of the situation in the New Worlds, and it has also proven a good proving ground for agents and acolytes.

The fortress guards the Screaming Passage, the most dangerous route into the New Worlds, and frequently investigates and recovers those foolish enough to travel it.
