Overview
Destroyed during the Horus Heresy, Smapox was the site of viral bombing that incinerated the surface. A surprisingly large amount of archeotech survived in underground complexes deep below the surface, though the dead surface still possesses significant danger to any would be excavators. Smapox is lethal to organic life, but those among the Mechanicus and Dark Mechanicus have both launched secret excavations to varying degrees of success. The danger of any mission near the Bubonic Rift is compounded by frequent patrols by the Rotfleet, who will attack unaligned Hereteks as eagerly as loyalist Tech-Priests, though the bounty is worth the risk. Smapox's unique position allows very skilled navigators to avoid the worst of the Bubonic Rift and skirt into orbit, making Smapox the most readily accessible of the Putrilocus subsector, though not one likely to serve as any Imperial staging ground in any potential campaign.
