Overview

One of the most secure prisons in Eternum, certainly in Caligulas, Crematoria has extreme temperature variations from 373 degrees Celsius during day to -182 degrees during night. These extreme temperatures prevent any life from existing on Crematoria's surface, with even most voidships unable to land. The only signs of civilization on the surface are thermally reinforced landing pads that retract thermofluid cooled shuttles into one of the many prison complexes that lie underground. These shuttles are specially designed to survive the heat of the planet, though they can only reach the orbital station responsible for intake and governance and rely on preprogrammed servitor pilots to prevent any hijacking. The prison complexes of Crematoria are staffed by guards who live in comparatively nice quarters overseeing the shared bunk spaces of the prisoners themselves. The prisoners work in the large flogiston mines Crematoria's heat helped forge, with food and shelter contingent on work. The prisoners themselves are loosely regulated with the guards only acting to stop property damage or spree killings, thus most prisoners join one of their complex's gangs for protection. Even knowing the almost certain death sentence, a few escape attempts happen where prisoners break out during the dawning of night, a rough 20 minute window where the temperature outside is survivable. These escape attempts search for a shelter or try to climb on the landing pad to stowaway on the next shuttle, but so far every attempt has ended with the would be escapee freezing or boiling to death, or being shot when making a dash for the shuttle. Crematoria is a ready source for penal troops in Eternum, with prisoners gladly accepting the slim chance for survival over working until they die in the hot flogiston mines. The Crematoria penal troops have a poor reputation with Guard officers however, with most penal units having a tenth of their explosive collars detonated before combat deployment for escape attempts or disobedience.
