Overview

A brutally violent mining world, Derringer's Point is inundated with powerful gangs, who in turn oversee miners (composed of debt slaves, gang slaves, or citizens forced to) who work day and night in each gang's 'stake'. Gang violence is incredibly common, both inside each gang's territory (internal politics, assassinations, and more) or on the border zones different gangs fight over. The rule of law is non-existent save for the spaceport and capital Paso, which is the only location on Derringer's Point that has any semblance of law and order. Enforced by the PDF, gangs are forbidden from conducting business in Paso, with severe penalties for violations that can see the gang squashed by the PDF and enemy gangs thus all gangs avoid Paso, save for the required mineral shipments. Each gang is required to provide a resource tithe corresponding to their territory size, with any discrepancies treated as a rebellion with the predictable PDF response shortly following.

Most inhabitants of Derringer's Point are born into slavery, with only a select few properly joining a gang - a life that offers far more luxury than the miners would otherwise see, but one that is often cut short through brutal block wars. For the average mine slave, the controlling gang matters little as their lot is the same, save for the more extreme and bloodthirsty gangs that populate the southern hemisphere, though most will eagerly volunteer for the Imperial Guard tithe if the opportunity presents itself. The planetary rulers have allowed this system to continue, occasionally participating themselves, for as long as the gangs continue to produce their required mineral tithes the world is left alone (to the detestment of the more progressive Ecclesiastical members in the subsector). Derringer's Point is also expected to provide Guard regiments on top of mineral exports, almost exclusively recruited from mining slaves or PDF troopers. The Derringer Freedmen are surprisingly apt in field - a fact believed by Imperial adapts to be due to even the slaves having frequent experience in combat and their fear of ever being sent back to the hell they originate from.
