Overview

A temperate-boreal world covered in lattices of edible fungus, Cerveres was the site of an ill-fated colonization effort by Imperials aboard the Chiron. The Chiron made planetfall and began to build settlements, but the loosely organized colonists came under attack by brutal native life, the most dangerous being Mindworms. Mindworms, individually small, form up into large aggregations termed Mindworm Boils, and, as colonists aboard the Chiron found out, possess simple psychic abilities.  As it approaches, it radiates waves of madness and fear.  Then once the defenders are insane, paralyzed, or catatonic, the worms swarm over the people and lay their eggs in the victims’ brains. Making defense even more difficult, the worms themselves are small and they can tunnel through solid metal thus fixed perimeter defenses are of no help. A few lucky colonists made it off world, to which the Inquisition took an interest with. Finding that their own psykers were even more vulnerable, the Inquisition determined the only way to survive contact was with the help of blanks. Although the world could be purged and resettled, the Inquisition, along with other branches of the Imperium, set out to weaponize the Mindworms instead, using Cerveres as a free range 'farm' for the boils. The occasional Mindworm will find its use in enhanced torture in an Inquisitorial cell, but proper weaponization has eluded the Imperium. Cerveres is guarded by an Inquisitorial detachment stationed in orbit, though others have either slipped by, or fought past the defenses, to try to harvest the deadly creatures.
