Overview

A unique penal world, Berkakoa exists to provide a safari for the most decadent nobles of the sector. Originally a simple feral world with large, docile life, nobles from Bellerophon looking for new excitement arrived they quickly ordered their hordes of retainers and attendants to pitch their camp while they began hunting to claim the largest trophies. This quickly blossomed into a new fad amongst the nobility of the sector, and soon the once feral world became a hunting ground constantly stalked by nobles from their protected hunting vehicles. The rate of hunting continued to increase and so did the demands of the nobles, thus with some political maneuvering, Berkakoa was reclassified a penal world, with large numbers of prisoners shipped in to maintain the grounds and infrastructure of the hunting resorts, and help stage hunts for the nobility.

Eventually the nobles hunted the last of the native life with skulls worthy of trophies, and the founding families found themselves facing a question of ending the lucrative hunts (both in thrones, and favors or secrets gathered from other nobles), or importing prey to hunt at incredible expense. They chose a 3rd option, and taking advantage of the penal world regulation that punishment is left to the governor's discretion so long as it doesn't veer into heresy the prisoners who broke the world's rules (or were in the wrong place at the wrong time) were turned into the new prey for the nobles. Given a one day headstart, the hunted prisoners are given a weeks worth of supplies and a hatchet and told to survive, while the nobles (who pay outrageous sums of thrones) hunt them in whatever manner they prefer. The nobility of the sector mostly finds this hunt barbaric, though Bellerophon's nobles view it as the greatest hunt possible. The powers of the sector begrudgingly tolerate this, as Bellerophon's control of the trade cartels mean any censure risks making powerful enemies, thus the Imperium at large turns a blind eye save the occasional Inquisitorial investigation when the touch of Slaneesh or Khorne is suspected. Berkakoa's tithe is both simple manufactured goods or leather produced by the prisoners, though penal legionary regiments are also raised (a fate that most prisoners welcome versus the risk of being hunted like an animal).
