Overview

An incredibly regimented world even by the standards of other penal worlds, Byankhongar is the final stop for any petty thief, thug, social reformer, common criminal, or the inconvenient to their planetary ruler.  Byankhongar has employed the same regimen for millennia, with the Wirz warden dynasty proudly extolling that this regimen under their watch has led to a prison with nothing more than minor block level riots, especially compared to other penal worlds in Eternum that have led to full scale riots requiring assistance from the Imperium to squash.

This regimen starts as soon as the transport craft bringing a fresh batch of prisoners arrives, with the inmates shaved, searched, then tattooed with their barcode on the back of their head. The warden is also quick to test any potential troublemakers, with the new prisoners told that their crimes forbid them from looking at the symbol of the Emperor's justice, the warden himself, without expressed permission of the warden. The prisoners are told this immediately prior to the warden's speech to the new arrivals, with Guards and high ranking trustees patrolling the assembled prisoners. The smarter or meeker inmates stare at the ground, but the defiant will look at the warden before finding out the punishment- brutal removal of an eye and an X tattoo across the forehead. Most fall in line after this, but the prison will not hesitate to take the second eye if the prisoner looks at the warden again.

Byankhongar has a significantly smaller guard population than other harsh penal worlds, but they make up the difference through a tiered 'trusty' system where well-behaved prisoners are given increased responsibility based off their loyalty and behavior, with the most trusted given weapons and carte blanche to met out justice as they wish. A rare select few trustees may even find a pardon after long enough service, allowing the only reprieve from the world's hell other than the routine penal legion forming or rare Naval or Inquisitorial impressment. Conditions are cramped at the many prison complexes built around the planet (all built on geothermal fissures that supply power), with most prisoners sharing small cells with many others - only trustees are allowed to have private or even, compared to the average cell, luxurious cells. Trustees oversee the bulk of labor as well, with only a handful of guards to function as the voice of the warden, from the ore mines to the simple manufactorums that make basic goods for export to the Imperium. Byankhongar itself is a dreary world, with dark grey deserts interspersed with black mountains, with the few sources of water controlled solely by guard barracks built on top - this, along with the Warden's fortress that houses the only spaceport ensure even if the trustee system fails, prisoners will shortly run out of water and be unable to leave the world. This is unlikely to ever be a concern however, as the Trusty system has proven incredibly effective - the bulk of prisoners work hard and stay out of trouble to attempt to get one of the coveted positions in an effort to improve their conditions and eventually maybe even leave, whereas the rabble rousers focus their hate on the trustee guards, occasionally killing one but marking themselves for easy pickings for the proper guards and avoiding any real threat to the prison. The Trusty system even extends to penal legions raised from Byankhongar, and some legions even have a Trustee in charge of the explosive collars they wear to ensure obedience. This has served the Imperium well in the meat grinders of the Gate, and a fresh arrival of the penal units are welcome by the proper Guard regiments as they will serve as their human shield.

There are isolated colonies of Ogryns on Byankhongar that originated from before its designation as a penal colony, mostly left alone they are occasionally sources of recruits for ogryn guards for the prison.
