Overview

A purposefully misnamed ice world filled with promethium and useful ores, Haven Tertius was named at the behest of the Bellerophon Rosarche Mining Conglomerate, who run a yearly 'lottery' for citizens of Bellerophon and other hive worlds whose prize is relocation to 'Haven'. The winners, of which there are many, are shoved in a charter captain's hold and transported to Haven Tertius, where they are then sent to their 'luxurious' quarters and assigned their new job as a prometheum rigger or miner. Kept in line by ogryns from Byankhongar, most settle into their new lives quickly. For some, Haven Tertius is better than their previous lives scrounging in the hive, but most quickly regret ever entering the 'lottery'. The arctic climate and relatively fast glacial ice preclude most forms of travel, only Snowtracker Trucks with their specially constructed tracks are usable at all times on the world, thus resource convoys ferrying mined products to spaceports (which also bring fresh workers in) are the only common transportation on the planet.

The PDF, chosen by each mining chief, are used to help keep the most unruly workpits in line, though most of the more established mines are stable. Mines or prometheum pumpjacks are dug into the ground, centered around a central prometheum powered thermo-generator responsible for both powering the settlement and keeping the workpit warm. Outside of the workpits, only the Snowtrackers are safe (and even with their heaters running they are a frigid transport) as the workers of Haven Tertius are given light clothing meant for the heat of the mines and to prevent them from attempting escape. Even if they managed to hide in a hidden wheelhouse or spot in a Snowtracker Truck, the arctic temperatures would freeze them quickly. The temperature can threaten even a workpit during one of Haven Tertius's Snapfronts, and even thermoregulated clothing in a heated Snowtracker will freeze in short order when exposed to the -80 degree weather - the workpits fare only slightly better, and it is all too common for the lowest of the menials regulated to hovels on the outskirts of the Pits to freeze after a Snapfront. This is little obstacle to the ruling cartel and their puppet governor, as there are always hordes of replacements 'winning' the lottery. The tithe of Haven Tertius is primarily paid in raw resources, though they are also expected to provide arctic Guard regiments. These regiments, the Twice Chosen, are not particularly noteworthy, though they have proven sufficient at arctic garrisons or defenses they lack the courage and aptitude for combat that the more skilled arctic regiments possess.
