Overview

Originally a large moon that sustained an atmosphere, Siegfried was converted from a mining world to a fortress world as the first Poxwar raged and the heart of Confedus was feared to be the next target. Mechanicus magos and their legions of servitors and indentured workers quickly worked to transform the mining tunnels and pits, and transfer sluices into a network of redoubts that could stymie the tide of invaders. Although there are smaller, and much more turbulent and dangerous warp lanes to Confedus's heart, the largest and most stable lane passes through Siegfried's system, and thus any sizable force must pass through Siegfried and deal with its warp-inhibitors before proceeding. The feared campaign never came to pass, and Imperial forces were transferred off Siegfried to join more important campaigns, leaving just the native former miners. A martial culture remained however, with mandatory PDF service and extensive drilling in defensive actions innate to all Siegfrieders. With any mines left completely tapped out, Siegfried's only tithe are guard regiments formed from the best PDF units and shipped out to replace the constant flow of casualties on Eternum's primary fortresses, The Aural and Iron Gates. Siegfried's guard forces, the Siegfried Line-Guard are a common sight on the Gates, though rarely formed into offensive units - the Line-Guard's forte is holding defensive positions, and this specialization is one they perform adequately. The loss of importance to the Imperium has resulted in Siegfried becoming a shadow of its former glory, with large fortress-complexes sitting abandoned or converted into trader enclaves, cold trader black market dens, pirate hideouts, or more radical Inquisitor's hidden vaults, all taking advantage of the constant traffic flowing through the system. Were Confedus to ever come under serious threat the Imperium could no doubt revitalize these abandoned fortresses, though the hooks of the arch enemy may find purchase sooner than reconstruction could be finished.
